After installing ImageControls Runtime Drivers version 2.1, I do not have a KSM (Kofax Source Manager) in the Control Panel. Why?
This is usually the result of a missing string in the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. For a default installation of ImageControls Version 2.1, you should have the following string included in your PATH statement: C:\PROGRA~1\KOFAX\IMGCTLS\BIN. If it is missing, add it and reboot. In some cases, the string may be included in your PATH statement, yet you still do not have a KSM in the Control Panel. This is usually caused by the Novell network login script re-writing your environment variables. To test this, open a DOS window and type PATH then press <Enter>. This will give you your PATH statement as it actually exists. If this varies from the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, then your network login script is modifying your environment variables. Workaround: Have your network administrator modify the login script or refrain from logging in to the network.
Why do I get an exclamation point next to the Adaptec device under Device Manager?
When installing the Adrenaline controller, the BIOS assigns I/O and IRQ settings. When going into Windows95, the device manager also assigns I/O and IRQ settings and they differ from the BIOS settings. This causes an exclamation point to show up next to the Adaptec device under Device Manager. To solve this problem, shut down the PC, remove the Adrenaline controller, and re-boot the PC. Now change the BIOS settings for the Adaptec to match the settings under Windows 95 and it should be able to load the driver properly. Finally, shut down the PC, re-insert the Adrenaline controller, and re-boot.
Do I still need two Kofax boards to drive a Bell+Howell 6338 dual-sided scanner?
No. A single Adrenaline 1700v accelerator board will support this scanner at rated speed. Note that a new scanner "Y" cable (SC-1022-0000) has been created to allow a single Adrenaline 1700v to connect to both front and rear camera connectors on the scanner.
We have found problems like this when the Adrenaline hardware controllers are installed into shared PCI/ISA slots on some PCs. The only solution is to not use shared slots. Move the Adrenaline board to a normal PCI slot and the problem should be resolved.
I am unable to load the driver on an Adrenaline 1700 video controller. Why?
It's possible that you are using the Adrenaline Hardware Runtime Drivers v1.0 with the Adrenaline Rev. C (or higher) controllers. You will need to use either the Adrenaline Hardware Runtime Drivers v1.0a which can be downloaded with a new firmware file from our FTP site.
Using the Ricoh IS420 or the B+H 1000FB/5000F with an Adrenaline SCSI board, I get an 'Error 20125 - No Scanner' or 'No Scanner Available' error after clicking OK following the resetting of the board. Why?
This can occur if you turn the scanner on while there is paper in the feeder. The scanner does not initialize properly. The solution is to remove all paper from the scanner including the feeder. Cycle the power on the scanner, reload the driver and now the scanner should be found. If you cycle the power of the scanner while there is paper in the feeder, you will get the error 'Not Ready'.
Also note that you cannot have the optional video module installed when you want to scan in SCSI mode.
Note that if you want to use the scanner with the video module installed, it will not work in video mode until you remove the SCSI terminator. This is valid for both ImageControls and Ascent Capture using both the IS420 and IS430 scanners.
How do I provide Technical Support with a driver log?
The following is the procedure to use for ImageControls 2.0 or higher applications:
Assume for this example that the scanner in question is the Fujitsu 3099EX.
1. The LOADER.SCR file should be located in ImageControls DRIVER subdirectory (Imgctls\driver). First, copy the LOADER.SCR file into another file that you can call FUJI.SCR. For this example, the file FUJI.SCR is used in the same directory as the LOADER.SCR file
2. In the newly created script file FUJI.SCR, a line similar to the following line should be located near the bottom:
LOADPRIM SCANNER FUJI M3099EX
This line should be modified by appending "LOG" to the end of it, such as:
LOADPRIM SCANNER FUJI M3099EX LOG
3. Modify the file BPDRIVER.DAT to use the new loader script file. For this example, the file FUJI.SCR was set as the new load script file. For example:
[SCANNER12]
Description=Fujitsu 3099EX ADF
MakeDesc=Fujitsu
ModelDesc=3099EX ADF
Type=FUJITSU
Model=3099EX
TypeId=0
MakeId=0
ModelId=20
Engines=0x8400
DriverGroup=FUJISCAN
ScanOption=
LoadScript=c:\progra~1\kofax\imgctls\driver\FUJI.SCR
At this point, the file LOADER.SCR will be recreated each time you load the drivers, but the drivers will use the custom loader script file, FUJI.SCR, to determine what steps to take when loading the drivers.
4. Reset the controller board or engine, and run the application and reproduce the error. This should create the needed driver log entries on the controller board.
5. Create the log file using the BKLOG32.EXE utility:
BKLOG32.EXE [\engine#] >> FUJI.LOG
In the above example, the default will be ENGINE1 and the results are redirected to the file FUJI.LOG so the line would normally look like:
BKLOG32.EXE [\ENGINE1] >> FUJI.LOG
I still can't load my Adrenaline card. Do you have some pointers?
The link below is a good article on PCI steering - what it is, how it works, where it's available, and how to enable/disable it. This could help you install the Adrenaline card which is a PCI card.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q182/6/04.asp
Using a B+H 8080 scanner, I need to shift the image to get the full image. Can you still do that with INI settings?
No, we can do that for the B+H 3338 and 6338 but the 8080 and the 8125 require a technician to adjust the frame location. This is a minor adjustment that should take only a few minutes. Please place a service call to B+H and they can correct this.
Do you know the best settings to use with a Fujitsu IPC3 card?
From Fujitsu, we understand that setting the scanner to photo mode with simplified dynamic threshold and image emphasis to smoothing mode works best. Do not use brightness and contrast. This should give the best results.
I get an error (ISINST30) when installing your product. What can I do?
Here are three reasons you may receive such an error and workarounds for each:
1. You are using a 4x or slower CD-ROM or you are using a CD-R (CD Writer). To workaround this problem, copy the CDROM to an empty directory on the hard drive and install from there.
2. Many applications use Install Shield to install their products. Sometimes files from a previous install can be left behind in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory, which may cause a conflict. To work around this problem, delete everything in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory (DO NOT INSTALL THE DIRECTORY) and try installing again.
3. Some drivers may cause a conflict with the InstallShield program. To work around this, copy the CD to an empty directory on the hard drive, reboot the computer in Safe Mode, and install from the hard drive.
If you are still having a problem installing our product, call Technical Support.
What electrical specifications do you have for the Adrenaline controller cards?
We meet all safety and EMI requirements including FCC class B and CUISBER B (European standards). We are currently undergoing UL certification. The boards operate in the PCI 5 volt (not the 3.3 volt) signaling environment. The maximum bus frequency is 33 MHz. The bus transmission is 32 bit/33 MHz (132MB/s). All cables are standard Belden models with custom Kofax connectors.
What is the mean time between failures (MTBF) for the Adrenaline series of boards?
All KF series controllers have a MTBF of 100,000 hours.
When the PC is turned on, after installing the Adrenaline board, the desktop is displayed rather than the New Hardware Found dialog box or the Update Device Driver Wizard.
The system has encountered an unrecoverable conflict with another device on the system, or the Adrenaline Accelerator has not been properly installed.
- Open the Windows Device Manager and find the Kofax "Adrenaline" entry. It should be listed under either the "Kofax Image Processor" or "Other Devices". If it is not listed, or it is listed with a exclamation point next to or a red line through the Adrenaline icon, then a conflict exists. The user will need to remove one of the other PCI devices, such as a network interface card.
- Verify that the Adrenaline Accelerator is properly installed on the system. Turn off the system and make sure the accelerator board is correctly seated in the slot.
When creating a source with the Kofax Source Manager, no accelerator information is displayed in the Select Scanner dialog box (for a scanner source) or in the Select Engine dialog box (for an import source).
Either the wrong source type was selected or the accelerator has not been added to the system.
- The user may have selected "Kofax Hardware" rather than "Kofax Adrenaline Hardware" as the Source Type from the Source Properties dialog box. Remove the Source then create the Source again, making sure that "Kofax Adrenaline Hardware" is selected as the Source Type.
- If using Windows 95 or 98, the user needs to add the Adrenaline Accelerator using the Add New Hardware Wizard. If this is not done, no engine will be available when creating the Source.
- If using Windows NT, the user needs to add the Adrenaline Accelerator using the KCM (Kofax Configuration Manager) Control Panel utility.
When running the Adrenaline EH-850 with the M3097x, error messages are displayed when the resolution is raised, the paper size is increased, and image processing functions are activated.
A known problem existed in ImageControls v2.0 when scanning A3 (11.7" x 16.5") or B (11" x 17") images at greater than 200 dpi. A patch is available from Kofax Technical Support to help resolve this problem.
Also, some of the older EH-850's do not have the memory to scan large, high resolution images with memory intensive image processing functions, such as deskewing, activated on the M3097 series of scanners. This problem does not exist with the EH-1700 and the 16MB model EH-850 boards.
The error message "Incorrect Scanner Firmware" is received when loading the drivers.
This is most likely due to loading the incorrect firmware files onto an Adrenaline Accelerator. For example, loading the scanner drivers for a SCSI interface scanner, such as a M3097G, onto a video interface Adrenaline Accelerator, such as the EH-1700-2000.
The Adrenaline Accelerator, EH-850 and EH-1700, drivers will not load. Why?
This problem may be encountered for various reasons.
- The Adrenaline Accelerator is installed in a shared PCI/ISA slot. The Adrenaline Accelerator should be installed in a non-shared PCI slot.
- The I/O Address Port is conflicting with another device. This occurs when the system believes that the I/O Port Address is available, but is not for some undetermined reason.
- The IRQ (interrupt) is conflicting with another device. This occurs when the system believes that the IRQ is available, but is not for some undetermined reason.
- It's possible that they are using the Adrenaline Hardware Runtime Drivers v1.0 with the Adrenaline Rev. C controllers. The Adrenaline Hardware Runtime Drivers v1.0a would resolve this problem and may be downloaded from our FTP site.
When the Adrenaline drivers are loaded, two files are created – LOADER.SCR and LOADER.LOG. LOADER.SCR is a script file that the Adrenaline drivers use to determine what should be done during the driver load process, such as which scanner driver firmware to load on the Adrenaline Accelerator. LOADER.LOG is a log file of what occurs during the load process. If an error occurs during the loading of the Adrenaline drivers, it will be listed in the LOADER.LOG file.
As a consequence, if the drivers will not load, the user should get a copy of the file LOADER.LOG from the ImageControls DRIVER subdirectory. The user should check the time and date stamp on this file to verify that it has been created when the Adrenaline drivers were last loaded, and that it was not created by a previous driver load process.
If the I/O Port Address is in conflict with some other device, the LOADER.SCR and LOADER.LOG file may not be created. Or, if the files are created, the contents of the LOADER.LOG file would appear similar to the following:
1 : DIR C:\PROGRA~1\KOFAX\IMGCTLS\DRIVER
2 : DIAG ENGINE2 C
Board Type : KF9285
IRQ : 3
IO Base : 0x12e
Host Error: Board Does Not Exist
Or
Host Error: Bad Parameter
If the Adrenaline Accelerator is not being recognized, it is indicative of a problem with the I/O Port Address. If the problem is an IRQ conflict, the Adrenaline Accelerator will be recognized, but the driver load will fail when it attempts to make use of the interrupt. The contents of the file LOADER.LOG would appear as:
1 : DIR C:\PROGRA~1\KOFAX\IMGCTLS\DRIVER
2 : DIAG ENGINE2 C
Board Type : KF9285
IRQ : 3
IO Base : 0x12e
- Board has been verified of being type KF9285.
- Board prom version: 7.0
- Memory starts at 0x40000000 for 12Mb.
- Onboard diagnostics activated.
- Onboard CPU Test. Passed.
- clearing memory. Range 0x40000c00 => 0x40bfffff.

The only way to rectify these two situations is to shut down the system, pull the Adrenaline Accelerator from it and install it into another PCI slot. If the user is going to do this, it would be recommended to remove all the PCI bus boards and move them to different slots, being careful not to use the shared PCI/ISA slot for the Adrenaline Accelerator. This will provide the system a fresh start on the assignment of I/O Port Addresses and IRQ's. This will minimize the chances of the problem occurring again.
As a note, if the Adrenaline Accelerator is having problems because it is installed in a shared PCI/ISA slot, the errors it encounters may appear as I/O Port Addresses and/or IRQ conflicts.
The error message "Error 20086 – Peripheral Power is Off, or cable not connected" is displayed after the drivers have loaded.
This error message is displayed when the KF-4100 is unable to communicate with the scanner. This may be a result of one of the following:
- An incorrect scanner type is selected.
- The scanner is not properly connected.
- The scanner has not been powered on.
Verify that the scanner is powered on, that all cable ends are firmly connected, and that no error conditions are displayed on the scanner's control panel. Also, verify that the pins on the cable connectors are not bent, broken, or "pushed in". If the problem persists, it may also be a faulty cable, scanner, or Adrenaline Accelerator.
I can't access the Image Address on my Kodak IL9500. Why?
We understand from Kodak support that certain scanners require firmware updates as follows to successfully set the image address:
- 9500 Scanner - needs SCSI firmware version 9.12
- 923 Scanner - needs SCSI board PT-141 (replaces older PT-102) and SCSI firmware version 9.04
- 900 Scanner - not possible
Advanced TWAIN Data Source for Adrenaline Hardware Controllers
Using Watermark with a duplex scanner, if the picking rectangle on the back side of the page has different dimensions than the front side, all the back side images will be distorted. Why?
Because Watermark queries the image size once and only once at the beginning of the batch. Other applications either query the image size for every transfer, or rely on the header information of the image data being transferred.
There's no fix for this.
There are two options to get Watermark to work properly with duplex scanning:
- Use no picking rectangle, i.e. scan the whole page.
- Set the picking rectangles to identical dimensions by choosing Scanner from the Properties menu, then clicking Options.
I have a Fujitsu 3097DE and a 3097DG scanner and I'm getting black vertical stripes in my images. I cleaned the lens but the line still appears.
With in the Fujitsu 3097DE/DG scanner there is a geared belt that can deposit dust on the Charged Coupled Display (CCD) within the scanner. This dust will cause a line on the image. Have a Fujitsu service rep clean your CCD and the problem should be solved.
How long a page can I scan with the Adrenaline controllers?
The maximum length is 30 inches, either simplex or duplex, as measured on Bell+Howell 3338 and 6338 scanners using the Adrenaline Hardware Runtime 3.23 release. Set your paper size to 'maximum' and turn off paper jam detection.
The DELL OptiPlex does not see the Adrenaline board in Win95/98
- Make sure the Adrenaline board is closest to the motherboard (slot 2) .
- Reboot your machine and the board should be seen.
- If the board is still not recognized, do the following:
- Boot machine into the BIOS
- Turn on the 'Num Locks', 'Caps Lock', and 'Scroll Lock'
- Press at the same time the 'Alt' and the 'E' keys, wait for a single beep, then release.
- Now exit and reboot.
The process described above resets the NVRAM (system resources) so all the IRQ's should reset after that.
This should also work on most DELL Dimensions as well.
