Notes:

Kofax Capture 8.0 has not been tested on, or certified for, Windows XP Home. Although Kofax is unaware of any specific limitations on using Windows XP Home with Kofax Capture 8.0, the use of Windows XP Home with Kofax Capture is not supported.

The use of Adrenaline accelerators is not supported on Windows Server 2003. In general, Windows Server 2003 does not support scanning with a SCSI card.

Warning: When installing Kofax Capture on Windows Server 2003, you may be confronted with a series of warning messages informing you that some files can harm your computer. These messages appear because Windows Server 2003 uses stricter security defaults than earlier versions of Windows.

Since this warning will occur repeatedly during the installation process, and may cause automatic/silent installations to fail, you can temporarily relax the security settings. After installation, you may restore the original settings.

For more information on this, and for instructions on changing these settings, find article number 182569 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and refer to the “1806 Launching applications and unsafe files” DWORD setting.

Do not attempt to edit the registry unless you have the necessary knowledge and experience. Damaging the registry may make your system inoperative.

Required Windows Service

The Server service must be running before installing Kofax Capture on a standalone workstation.

Configuration Requirements

This section contains information on a number of Kofax Capture configuration requirements. These are the required system configuration settings for Kofax Capture.

Kofax Capture License Management

Kofax Capture supports a centralized license management scheme that requires a hardware key on the Kofax Capture server at the central site, and on standalone installations. Client workstations do not require hardware keys to run Kofax Capture.

Note: With the software-based licensing option, the hardware key is not required. Instead, activation occurs with your Kofax serial number and product code.

The rest of the installation and activation process remains the same as licensing with a hardware key.

The key features of the license management scheme are:

Activation typically occurs during installation of a Kofax Capture server or standalone station, but can also occur after installation.

Note: During Kofax Capture installation on a server or standalone station, you need to have Internet access if you want to automatically activate your license at that time. If the station does not have Internet access, you will be able to install Kofax Capture, but will need to use the Kofax Capture License Utility to activate your licenses after installation.

After activation, the Kofax Capture License Utility allows you to view the status of activated licenses, as well as activate new or additional licenses for your system. Refer to the Kofax Capture online Help for details about using the License Utility. Click here to download the Kofax Capture 8.0 Online Help.

Note: For more information about the options purchased for your company, contact your system administrator or Kofax Certified Solution Provider.

Network Components

Kofax Capture requires that the TCP/IP protocol be installed and running in your Windows network configuration settings. Prior to installing Kofax Capture, ensure that the following are installed and functioning properly:

Contact your network administrator or refer to your Microsoft documentation for more information about these components.

Note: Not having the TCP/IP protocol may be a problem in standalone installations that have never been connected to the Internet, or a network, or where the TCP/IP protocol has been removed or disabled. If you attempt to install a standalone version of Kofax Capture on a computer without TCP/IP, the installation may fail with an “Unable to Initialize Batch Catalog” error message. The batch catalog is the Kofax Capture database.

Administrative Privileges Required

To install Kofax Capture, the logged-in user must have administrative privileges to the local computer.

Database Support

For new Kofax Capture installations, you can select the desired database configuration (as listed in this section) at the start of the install process. You can also switch database configurations at any time after installation.

For upgrades from Ascent Capture 6.x or 7.x, the existing database configuration will be maintained. No option to switch databases is provided during an upgrade, however you can switch at any time after the upgrade. If your current installation is using the Standard (MSDE) database configuration, SQL Server Express Edition will be automatically installed.

Standard

Kofax Capture uses the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database. This standard database ships with Kofax Capture, and requires no additional software or configuration.

Note: All references to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on this Web page assume Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 unless otherwise noted.

SQL Server

You can use SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4, SQL Server 2005, or SQL Server 2005 64-bit if you want to actively administer the database, or for scalability and availability.

Kofax Capture does not ship with or install SQL Server.

See the Kofax Capture Getting Started Guide for more information on switching database configurations. Also review the SQL Server Database Permissions for Use with Ascent Capture 7.5 or Kofax Capture 8 Technical Note for the necessary SQL Server 2005 database permissions when using Kofax Capture 8 or Ascent Capture 7.5 with a SQL Server 2005 database. This Technical Notes also provides information about the application role’s membership to the db_owner database role..

Note: All references to SQL Server on this Web page assume SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4 or SQL Server 2005 unless otherwise noted.

Oracle

You can use Oracle Database if you want to actively administer the database, or for scalability and availability.

To use Oracle Database, create an empty schema where you want to store Kofax Capture information. The user name provided when you installed Kofax Capture must have this schema set as the default schema for that user. The user must also have user rights to create objects in that schema.

Refer to Appendix F – Kofax Capture Database Management Requirements on page 223 of the Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide for information about Oracle requirements. Also review the Oracle Database Permissions for Use with Kofax Capture 8 Technical Note for the necessary Oracle database permissions when installing and using Kofax Capture 8 with an Oracle database.

Kofax Capture does not ship with or install Oracle.

IBM DB2

You can use IBM DB2 if you want to actively administer the database, or for scalability and availability.

To use IBM DB2, create an empty schema where you want to store Kofax Capture information. The user name provided when you installed Kofax Capture must have this schema set as the default schema for that user. The user must also have user rights to create objects in that schema.

Note: For IBM DB2 installations running on Windows, the database must be configured as a Unicode database prior to installing Kofax Capture.

Refer to Appendix F – Kofax Capture Database Management Requirements on page 223 of the Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide for information about IBM DB2 requirements. Also review the IBM DB2 Database Permissions for Use with Kofax Capture 8 Technical Note for the necessary IBM DB2 database parameters and permissions when using Kofax Capture 8 with an IBM DB2 database.

Kofax Capture does not ship with or install IBM DB2.

Database Validation and Release Support

Kofax Capture supports Microsoft Access 2000, and 2002, or any ODBC-compliant database for the Database Validation feature and for releasing index data to a database.

Kofax Capture does not provide ODBC drivers for target databases.

Database Management Components

For managing batches during processing, Kofax Capture uses SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, which is a version of SQL Server. When installing the Kofax Capture server software or a Kofax Capture standalone installation, the required database management components are also installed.

Note: You must use the versions of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) that shipped and installed with Kofax Capture.
Kofax Capture will install correctly and can coexist with existing installations of SQL Server or MSDE or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, provided Kofax Capture is installed in a folder under the same parent directory as these products, usually C:\Program Files.

For example, if SQL Server is installed in C:\Program Files\MSSQL, then the Kofax Capture server software should be installed in a folder such as C:\Program Files\<Kofax Capture installation folder>.

Warning: Do not install Kofax Capture in the same directory as SQL Server (all editions) or on a computer with earlier versions of these applications. If you do, the results will be unpredictable and you may render your SQL Server software inoperable.

Internet Protocol Support

Browser Support

The online Help for Ascent Capture requires Internet Explorer 6 (or higher) be set as your default browser. Although no known incompatibilities exist with previous versions of Internet Explorer, the online Help for Ascent Capture has been certified only with Internet Explorer 6.

If the browser that you are currently using is a version earlier than Internet Explorer 6, the installation will stop and display a warning message indicating that Internet Explorer 6 is not installed. After you acknowledge the warning, the installation will resume.

Before using the online Help, install or upgrade your browser to Internet Explorer 6 and set it as the default browser for your system.

Kofax Capture Import connector - Email

The Kofax Capture Import Connector - Email feature has the same operating requirements as Kofax Capture itself.

Refer to Chapter 12 – Installing and Configuring Kofax Capture Import Connector - Email on page 177 of the Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide for information about installing this feature.

Other Installation Options

Kofax KF-Series Boards Support Discontinued

Effective with version 5.5, Kofax Capture no longer supports KF-Series boards. These boards are not compatible with the newest drivers shipped with Kofax Capture, so KF-Series boards must be removed from your computer before you install or upgrade to Kofax Capture 8.0. There is no need to uninstall the KF-Series board drivers.

Terminal Servers and Citrix Support

You can operate Kofax Capture via a Terminal Services or Citrix session. Once logged in to the Terminal Services or Citrix session, Kofax Capture operates as if it were installed on your local computer. However, you should be aware of the following station licensing conditions.

Note: Citrix supports all Kofax Capture modules except for the Scan module.

Supported Version

Kofax Capture 8.0 has been certified for use with Citrix Presentation Server 4.5, Enterprise Edition.

Running Multiple Modules in a Session

Station licenses apply to the session rather than the computer. This allows you to run multiple licensed applications in one session. Licensed applications that are running within the same session will share this same station license. For example, if you are running Recognition Server, Validation, and Quality Control modules at the same time, on the same computer, and in the same Terminal Services or Citrix session, then only one Kofax Capture concurrent station license is required.

However, licensed applications that are running within different sessions will not share the same station license. For example, if you are running Recognition Server, Validation, and Quality Control modules at the same time, on the same computer, but each is running in a different Terminal Services or Citrix session, then three Kofax Capture station licenses are required.

Running a Mix of Session and Client Based Modules

Kofax Capture applications that run as services are part of the same session as the console. For example, if Recognition Server is running as a service and a user at the console is running the Validation module, then a single Kofax Capture concurrent station license is used. However, if Recognition Server is running as a service and a user connects remotely (via Terminal Services or Citrix) and runs the Validation module, then two Kofax Capture concurrent station licenses are required.

Tracking Terminal Services and Citrix Session Usage Statistics

In order to track individual sessions running on a single station, the station ID for the session includes both the station ID and the session ID. For example:

StationID = ScanStation: Sess 42

Disconnecting and Logging-Out Terminal Services and Citrix Sessions

When a Terminal Services or Citrix session is disconnected, the session state becomes “Disconnected.” All running applications remain running in an idle state, and any consumed Kofax Capture station licenses remain consumed. When the user logs in again and reconnects, the session becomes active again, and the running applications resume their prior states.

Note: If a licensed Kofax Capture module is running within a disconnected session and the administrator forces a logoff of that session, or the application terminates abnormally for any reason, the consumed Kofax Capture station license will be released within the time-out period (20 minutes by default) or after the Kofax Capture licensing service has been manually restarted.

When a Terminal Services or Citrix session is logged-out, the session is closed and any consumed Kofax Capture licenses are released. The session no longer displays in the Management Console.
