1. Is Ascent Capture compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista?
In anticipation of Microsoft's impending full release of the Windows Vista product next year, Kofax Ascent version 8.0 (scheduled for release in 2007) will be certified in a Windows Vista operating system environment. With Ascent 8.0, all Windows Vista features will be supported to ensure maximum synergy between the OS and the industry leading Ascent product. Earlier versions of Ascent -- Ascent version 7.x and earlier -- will not support Windows Vista. These systems will first need to be upgraded to Ascent 8.0 in order to support MS Vista. Kofax's software assurance program virtually eliminates software costs associated with this upgrade.
Until Ascent 8.0 is released and Windows Vista certification is announced, Ascent products are officially not supported in a Windows Vista environment. Kofax recommends that our customers not install Windows Vista on systems using Ascent products. When the testing and certification process is concluded, the applicable product configuration pages on this Web site are updated to indicate certification and/or any known problems.
2. Can I upgrade directly to Ascent Capture 7.x from version 3.x or 4.x?
Users of Ascent Capture 3.x or 4.x must first upgrade to Ascent Capture 5.x or 6.x prior to upgrading to Ascent 7.x. Ascent Capture 7.x does not support a direct upgrade from Ascent Capture version 4.x or prior.
3. Can I upgrade my Ascent Capture version 5.x or 6.x batch classes to be compatible with Ascent Capture version 7.x?
Yes. Batch classes are automatically converted from version 5.x or 6.x during the upgrade. Ascent Capture version 7.x will also convert Ascent Capture version 5.x or 6.x batch classes when they are imported.
4. Can I upgrade my Ascent Capture site to version 7.x while batches are in the system?
Yes. Batches can be in the system during the upgrade installation. However, remember that no Ascent Capture modules or unattended module services can be running during the Ascent Capture upgrade.
5. Can batches from remote Ascent 6.x sites be uploaded to an ACI Server 7.x and subsequently be processed by a central Ascent 7 system?
Batches from remote Ascent 6.x installations can be uploaded to an ACI Server running version 7, and processed by an Ascent Capture system that has been upgraded to Ascent Capture 7. However, no new or modified batch classes can be downloaded from a central Ascent 7 site to a remote 6.x site.
6. What station licenses are available in Ascent Capture 7?
The following lists the basic station licenses available in Ascent Capture.
”Full Station” –This license allows one station to run any desired Ascent Capture applications.
”Remote Full Station ” –This license allows one station to run any desired Ascent Capture applications, but only functions on an ACI Server remote site.
”Scan / Quality Control” –This license allows one station to run Scan and/or Quality Control.
”Custom Module” –This license allows one station to run a Custom Module.
Note: Your system may contain additional types of station licenses.
7. Do Ascent Capture 6.x release scripts work with Ascent Capture 7?
Yes. All Ascent Capture 6.x release scripts are compatible with Ascent Capture 7.
Release scripts may need modifications to take advantage of new features in Ascent 7 such as folder and table support.
8. Will my existing Ascent Capture 6 hardware key work with the new Ascent Capture 7 licensing server?
Yes. You can reuse your existing hardware key from Ascent Capture version 6. You will need a new Ascent Capture 7 compatible activation code. Provided that you have completed your upgrade order, and that your system has Internet access, then the new activation code will be automatically downloaded during the installation.
9. How does the Ascent Capture License Manager chose the correct station license?
When starting an Ascent Capture application, the Ascent Capture license manager will automatically choose the least flexible license that supports that application. The feature licenses, listed in order of most flexible to least flexible, are Full Station, Remote Full Station, Scan/Quality Control, and Custom Module.
For instance, if a system includes one “Full Station” license, and one “Custom Module” license, and the user starts a custom module, then the system will chose the “Custom Module” license since it is least flexible. The “Full Station” license would have also satisfied the licensing requirement but it would be bypassed as more flexible.
It the same user left the custom module running, and then started Validation on the same station, then the system would release the “Custom Module” license and acquire the “Full Station” license since the “Custom Module” license would no longer be adequate.
Note: Once a license is upgraded in this manner, it is never downgraded until all applications on that station are exited.
10. If I run out of “Import eDocument” volume, can I continue to import eDocuments using my “Scan/Import page” volume?
Yes, you can import eDocuments using either “Import eDocument” volume or “Scan/Import page” volume. If both volume licenses are available, Ascent Capture will decrement “Import eDocument” volume for each eDocument imported.
Yes! You now have the option to limit the volume used by certain remote sites. You can set these limits on the new “Volume Licensing” tab of the ACI Server Remote Site Profiles dialog.
12. What happens to an Ascent system if the hardware key on a licensing server fails?
In the unlikely event of a dongle failure, Kofax Technical Support possesses a mechanism to allow your customer to continue running the system for 72 hours without a hardware key attached to the licensing server. This is achieved by issuing a temporary software key which is generated by Kofax Technical Support. Once the temporary license has been generated, a replacement dongle will be expedited to the customer. Please contact Kofax Technical Support during normal business hours for assistance. After hours support during the week is available for Certified Solution Providers with emergency issues only (such as dongle failure). If you leave a message and you are not a certified CSP with an emergency issue on an Ascent product, your call will be returned during standard business hours. There is no weekend technical support available except for Ascent Capture licensing issues. Please call 949.727.1733, select the licensing option from the Kofax phone menu (press 62 when prompted.), leave a message and a support engineer on call will be notified to call you back.Note: With Ascent 7 you now have the option to purchase a backup hardware key and licensing configuration, which can be deployed on a second license server.
13. When upgrading an Ascent Capture 6.1 workstation to Ascent Capture 7.0, I get an error message saying “Unable to register .NET assembly file” and then the upgrade terminates. How can I resolve this problem?
The “Unable to register .NET assembly file” error may happen during a workstation upgrade from Ascent Capture 6.1 to Ascent Capture 7.0. When prompted with the error, simply click “OK” and then restart the upgrade. The error message will not occur during the second initiation, and the workstation will successfully upgrade.
14. When I try to install the Ascent Capture Email Import Service and use an account with Administrative rights, I receive the following error message: “You must have Administrator rights to install the Ascent Capture Email Import service.” How can I resolve this error?
The “You must have Administrator rights to install the Ascent Capture Email Import service” error may appear during ACEI installation on Windows XP. This error is caused by a Windows XP local security setting. Specifically, this error will happen if Windows XP local security specifies “Guest only – local users authenticate as Guest.” To avoid the error, reconfigure Windows XP local security to specify “Classic – local users authenticate as themselves.”
Users with the “Guest only” account will receive the same level of access to a given resource, which can either be “Read Only” or “Modify.” The Microsoft “Classic” model allows control over access to resources. Refer to the Microsoft Web site for more information on the local security settings.
VRS QC Later is a new Ascent Capture 7.0 feature that allows you to fix bad scans without having to rescan your documents. An Ascent Capture operator that is equipped with VRS QC Later can correct images without a scanner.
16. Are both hardware and software VRS supported by QC later?
Yes, both hardware and software VRS can be used with QC later. If you are using a hardware VRS scanner, then you will probably need to download a firmware update. See the following web page for details about the availability of appropriate firmware updates for your scanner.
17. Can I create a table within a table?
No. You cannot create tables within another table.
18. Can I read table data with OCR?
No. There is no support for the direct recognition of (such as by OCR) of table data. If this is needed, then you can either chose to implement customizations, or purchase an add-on product that supports such a feature.
A folder is a related set of documents (or other folders). Folders typically have shared index fields that describe data common to all of the folder contents.
20. Can a folder have index fields?
Yes, folders can have index fields. The index fields describe data common to all of the folder contents.
Index fields are created on the General tab of the Folder Class Properties window.
21. Does Ascent Capture support folders within folders?
Yes, you can nest folders to a theoretically infinite depth.
22. Can Ascent Capture create folders automatically?
Yes, you can configure Ascent Capture to automatically create folders based on document index field values.

23. Can I import email into Ascent Capture?
Yes. The new email import server allows you to acquire email from a particular mailbox and import it into Ascent Capture.
24. Is there an extra charge for the Email Import Server?
No. The Email Import Server is included with Ascent Capture. For each email, the system uses up one or more units of “Scan/Import page” or “Imported eDocument Page Count” volume license (depending on the number of attachments).
25. Can I capture email fields such as “from,” “to,” and “subject?”
Yes. You can optionally map a number of email fields to Ascent Capture index fields.
26. Can I capture email attachments?
Yes. Attachments are imported as part of the document in Ascent Capture.
27. Can I capture all emails sent to a specific server?
No. Email capture is linked to specific mailboxes, not the entire server. Multiple mailboxes can be configured.
28. Which email servers are supported?
Ascent Capture supports Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.
