1. What new features are in the INDICIUS 5.1 release?
The following new features are included in the INDICIUS 5.1 product release.
- Enhanced Image Classification
Image classification has been enhanced to use a more powerful image classification method, in fact the same one that is used by Xtrata. Though the underlying image classification engine has been improved for INDICIUS, very few changes have been made to the configuration and running of image classification. The new image classifier is more intuitive than the previous version. It works by looking for positive matches between documents, so it doesn't require counter examples and can therefore be trained on just a single type of pages or documents. Training of the classifier is still implemented using the Classification Trainer, with only minor changes to the training wizard.
The new image classifier can still be used alongside text, template, rules and advanced text classification – in fact it is now more suitable for the mixed classification approach.
These enhancements do mean that image classifiers built prior to version 5.1 are no longer supported; they must be re-built using the Classification Trainer.
- Key Features and Benefits
- More sophisticated and intuitive classifier resulting in improved classification results.
- Support for processing up to 10,000 document/page types within a single configuration.
- Configuration using the quick and easy-to-use Classification Trainer - trains, creates the classifier, script and a test project.
- Integration through script gives the flexibility to combine image classification with other methods, such as free-form rules or advanced text classification.
- New Document Review Script Methods
New methods have been implemented to enable a user to retrieve and set data during separation and/or within the Document Review module. Scripts can be created to get and set Ascent Capture batch fields, folder and document index fields and batch, folder, document and page custom storage strings
- Key Features and Benefits
The new scripting can be used:
- For gathering statistical information to analyze and improve separation performance.
- To identify and report changes to batch structure and document types for audit purposes. For example, for documents that have been modified manually, storing original document type and location information as well as who made the change and when it was made.
- To perform separation based on additional workflow/context information within the batch, for example merging document types.
- To implement custom validations, for example based on index field values.
- To propagate data, for example from a folder to its child documents.
- To manipulate data, for example copying data between all documents within a folder.
- Additional Support in a High Availability Environment
Additional support has been added when working with Ascent Capture 7 in a high availability system. A
retries mechanism has been added to all modules to match that available in native Ascent Capture
modules. This retry behavior apples to:
- Loading images.
- Loading configuration files and scripts.
- Leading/writing out results files.
- Loading data from a previous Recognition instance.
Previously, if a failure occurred and a resource could not be accessed the INDICIUS module would not
attempt to access the resource again and therefore processing would be likely to stop. With the new retry behavior, the module can try multiple times to access the resource. For more information about the new features found in the INDICIUS 5.1.0 product, search on "New Features in Release 5.1.0" in the INDICIUS Help or locate the "New Features in Release 5.1.0" section in the INDICIUS® Version 5.1.0 for Ascent Capture Release Notes document (Rev A - 01/24/06).

All aspects of the integration between INDICIUS 5.1 and Ascent Capture 7.x have been extensively tested and all INDICIUS features have been demonstrated to work correctly with the INDICIUS supported Ascent Capture 7.x product releases.Ascent Capture 7.x New Features
Supported Features
Auto-foldering
Folders created manually or by the auto-foldering process may be used within a batch processed by INDICIUS modules.
The INDICIUS modules (except for Document Review – see below) ignore folders but process the documents contained within one or more levels of folders. Documents are processed in a depth-first manner with respect to the folder hierarchy, i.e. documents in folders are processed before documents not in folders.
The INDICIUS Document Review module supports only a single folder level and can utilize this by optionally displaying folders within the batch to the user.
The values of folder-level custom storage strings cannot currently be set or retrieved by INDICIUS modules.
Folders may not be used with scripted document separation (configured using the DocSep object in Recognition).
Ascent Xtrata
The INDICIUS Recognition module can utilize registration and classification information determined by Ascent Xtrata. Xtrata version 1.5 SP2 is required for use with Ascent Capture 7.0, and this version is supported by INDICIUS.
For more information about using Xtrata with INDICIUS, see the INDICIUS Configuration Help (“ImportCoords” and “DocumentType” topics in the Parameter Help section).SQL Server support
INDICIUS supports the use of the SQL Server database and this database configuration option must be used in high availability solutions.
INDICIUS does not support the storage of batches in a SQL Server database. This option is not required in a high availability environment and must not be used. Click here to review further information on SQL Server support - Storing Batches in SQL Server.
ACIS 7.x
INDICIUS may be used in an ACIS 7.0 SP1, 7.0 SP2, 7.0 SP3, 7.5, 7.5 SP2, and 7.5 SP3 environment, and INDICIUS modules may be installed and used on both central and remote sites. A copy of the configuration files assigned to the batch class must be present on all sites and the path to these files must be the same as that specified in Ascent Administration (on the central site).
VRS QC Later
INDICIUS modules can be used within a batch class utilizing VRS QC Later.
High availability installations
INDICIUS is certified as a high availability solution. INDICIUS supports the high availability features of Ascent Capture. In order to use INDICIUS in a highly available environment, the Store batches in SQL Server option must be disabled. See the section on Support for High Availability Features by clicking here.
Unsupported Features
SQL Server support - Storing Batches in SQL Server
INDICIUS supports the use of the SQL Server database and this database configuration option must be used in high availability solutions.
INDICIUS does not support the storage of batches in SQL Server database. The Store batches in SQL Server option should be disabled, and the batches should be stored in the default location.
Note: One of the key benefits of storing batches in an SQL database is that it provides the ability to recover data entered during a session which terminated prematurely. Since INDICIUS does not output data to the database until the batch is closed, this option would provide no benefit to the INDICIUS part of a solution.
IMPORTANT: Batches do not need to be stored in an SQL Server database to make a system highly available.
Table fields
There is no support in INDICIUS for writing INDICIUS table fields to Ascent table fields (INDICIUS maintains support for writing table fields to one or more Ascent index fields).
Email Import
Ascent Capture Email Import cannot be used with the INDICIUS modules. Ascent Capture Email Import requires the processing of eDocument files which INDICIUS does not currently support.
Support for High Availability Features
INDICIUS is certified as a high availability solution. INDICIUS supports the high availability features of Ascent Capture 7; further details are described below:
Automatic Batch Recovery/Rollback
- INDICIUS only supports batch rollback, not batch recovery. This means that the batch is restored to the state it was in at the start of the session; data read or keyed in the failed session is not recovered. This is the case even if batches are stored in an SQL Server database.
Backup License Servers
- Recognition/Scripted Export will seamlessly switch to using volume licenses on the backup license server during a failover.
- Correction, Completion and Document Review will correctly reacquire station licenses from the backup license server after a failover
Database and File System Retries
- In the event of a cluster failover event, all batch processing will but be put on hold but will automatically continue when the high availability file system is restored. If the retry period expires before the file system becomes available, the module will attempt to send the batch to the Quality Control error queue. If the module is unable to place the batch into an error state, it will INDICIUS Release Notes 5.1 for Ascent Capture remain In Progress until Ascent Capture automatically rolls it back to its previous state (this may take up to twenty minutes).
Enhanced SQL Server Support
- INDICIUS supports the use of the SQL Server database.
Note: Storing batches in the SQL Server database is not required for high availability and is not supported.
Operating INDICIUS in High Availability Environments
Systems Operator
- Watch for any serious slowdown in application performance, or "hanging" of the application, which may indicate a server failure. If you experience this, contact your systems administrator. Do not attempt to close the batch. When the system recovers, the module will become active again and you will be able to continue processing the batch.
- If you experience any error messages while processing batches, immediately contact your systems administrator. If possible, try to record information about the batch you were processing, which document the error occurred on, what action you were performing at the time of the error and, if possible, the full text of the error messages seen.
Systems Administrator
- Monitor Ascent Batch Manager periodically to check for batches sent to Error/Quality Control. These will need to be restarted and may indicate a module failure.
- Use third party monitoring tools to monitor the status of the Recognition and Scripted Export services.
