1. What scanners does the VRS bundle support?
This first bundle release of VirtualReScan will support the Fujitsu M3097DE scanner. Bundle availability will be mid March 2000. Order placement is effective upon receipt of this package.
This second bundle release of VirtualReScan will support the Fujitsu M3093DE scanner. Bundle availability will be Early April 2000. Order placement is effective upon receipt of this package.
2. Is VirtualReScan just software?
No. VRS is actually a combination of hardware and software. Specifically:
VRS Grayscale Adapter (GSA): Installed inside the scanner
VRS cable: Custom cable used to connect a VRS Ready scanner to the VRS host adapter installed in the PC
VRS software: 32-bit software used to evaluate all images (More detail to follow)
VRS host Adapter: Included in the bundle, excluded in the lower cost upgrade package (the upgrade package is for users who already own an Adrenaline video board)
3. Are there any additional components needed for a VRS-enabled scanner to work?
Yes. There are three additional items that are needed before a VRS solution is ready for scanning:
Black background for users who want to convert the scanner’s flatbed to black and white (additional cost)
3097DE Flatbed black background kitpart number: BB-1000-2000
3093DE Flatbed black background kitpart number: BB-1000-3000
(Optional) Additional memory SIMM for duplex scanning. A standard 72-pin SIMM is sufficient. On the 3097DE, the SIMM is required for scanning larger paper size documents at high resolution. On the 3093DE, the additional SIMM is required to scan in duplex mode.
4. If I already have an Adrenaline 850 or 1700 video accelerator, can I use it?
Yes. If you already have an Adrenaline board you should purchase the VRS Upgrade Kit for Fujitsu scanner you own or plan to purchase. If you order the VRS Bundle for the 3097DE or the bundle for the 3093DE you’ll end up having an extra Adrenaline board. The VRS Bundle is designed for users who do not yet own an Adrenaline board. The VRS Upgrade kit is designed for users who already own an Adrenaline board.
No. There are unique features in VRS that require the use of the cable that ships with the VRS kit.
6. Will VRS run my scanner at rated speed?
Yes… but since we cache and process images in grayscale, you’ll need to use the scanner’s grayscale performance numbers as opposed to the black and white performance numbers you’ve seen published throughout the industry. The following table shows the grayscale throughput capabilities of the M3097DE and M3093DE scanners in both simplex and duplex. VRS can achieve these speeds when configured on any Pentium III class PC.
| Scanner |
Simplex |
Duplex |
| M3097DE w/VRS |
36 ppm |
26 ppm |
| M3093DE w/VRS |
27 ppm |
10 ppm |
The duplex speeds are slower than the scanners normal duplex speed because the scanner is having to cache the back side page. The scanner is designed to be able to transfer the back side image at rated speed when scanning black and white images. By introducing VRS into the scanner, the scanner must now transfer the back side image in grayscale which results in the drop off in performance.
7. Will VRS work in an existing Fujitsu SCSI scanner?
No. VRS can only be installed in the current Fujitsu video scanners There are two reasons for this:
SCSI does not offer the bandwidth necessary for VRS
8. Does VRS work in conjunction with Fujitsu’s IPC 3 processor in the scanner?
No. The VRS GSA provides advanced, adaptive thresholding and grayscale image processing technology for the scanner. As soon as the VRS GSA is installed into the scanner’s third party slot, the data path from the scanner’s camera bypasses the IPC board completely. In fact, both the IPC board and the VRS GSA board cannot reside in the scanner at the same time, as the scanner’s power supply is not strong enough to support both boards at the same time. You must remove IPC prior to installing the VRS GSA.
9. What scanning applications does VRS work with?
VRS is designed to operate transparently with any 32-bit applications that support Kofax Adrenaline hardware accelerators, and ISIS®-compatible or TWAIN™-enabled applications.
10. Does my scanning application need to be updated to work with VRS?
No. VRS was designed specifically to not require any ISV (Independent Software Vendor) to be forced to make changes to their scanning application. As long as the application meets the requirements denoted in #9 above, it will work fine with VRS.
11. How do I get VRS to work with my scanning application?
Setting up VRS is easy. With your scanning program already installed on your PC, install the VRS software. Once the VRS software has been installed, launch the scanning software as usual. When selecting the scanner you would like to use from within the application, you will see a scanner source entitled, “VirtualReScan Source.” As soon as you select this scanning source, VRS is activated.
12. Since the VRS GSA is installed into the Fujitsu scanner, who do I contact for support?
This product is supported just like any other product offered by Kofax Image Products. Should you have any questions, please contact your local Kofax support office or contact Kofax Image Products corporate at:
Kofax Image Products Technical Support:
Email: support@kofax.com
Phone: +1 949.727.1733 From the main menu, select 6 (post sales), then 3 (installation).
13. How will I be able to get updates to VRS?
Contact your scanner manufacturer.
14. What if I do not have access to the World Wide Web. Will I still be able to get update information?
Yes. All registered owners of VRS will be notified either via email or regular mail of major upgrades.
15. Who is responsible for installing the VRS GSA in the scanner and the black background kit?
The distributor is responsible for installing the GSA in the scanner and for installing the black background kit for the ADF. There are instructions included in the bundle that will instruct the distribution technician configuring your scanner on how to install the GSA and the black background kit for the ADF.
You should also have your distributor install the black background kit for the flatbed (If you choose to purchase the accessory kit that will allow you to upgrade the scanner’s flatbed to a blackground).
16. Do I have to purchase the black background kit for the flatbed?
The black background kit for the flatbed is optional. If you don’t purchase the optional flatbed black background kit you won’t be able to use deskew, cropping and auto-contrast and auto-brightness adjustments when you scan using the flatbed. These features require a black background in order to function correctly.
