1. What is the difference between VRS 1.04 and VRS 1.05?

VRS 1.05 is the later of the two versions, and naturally it's improved somewhat. It offers support for scanners with imprinters and for TWAIN and ISIS, all of which were lacking in Version 1.04. It also produces even better images and adds an auto brightness feature. (Here's a further detail: VRS 1.05 uses Kofax ImageControls 3.6 whereas VRS 1.04 uses Kofax ImageControls 3.3.)

2. What operating system is VRS 1.05 compatible with?

VRS 1.05 is fully compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 with 32-bit support, and Windows 2000.

3. What computer features does VRS v1.05 require?

Here's what you need for Version 1.05:

  • Pentium III class PC with a 500 Mhz processor or greater
    Pentium III class PC with 600 Mhz or greater (grayscale scanning)
  • 128 Mbytes RAM
    256 Mbytes RAM (grayscale scanning)
  • Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 with 32-bit support, or Windows 2000
  • Hard drive with 250 Mbytes free disk space
  • Monitor resolution: 800 x 600 minimum; 1024 x 768 recommended
  • Kofax Adrenaline 850V Controller (sold separately)

Note: VRS 1.05 has been thoroughly tested under varied conditions. It has run correctly even on computers operating at only 200 MHz. Of course, its performance is better on faster computers.

4. When I uninstall VRS 1.05 from Windows 2000 and reinstall it, I can't get VRS 1.05 to run. How can I get VRS 1.05 to work?

In order to successfully reinstall VRS 1.05 (or 1.04) in a Windows 2000 environment, you need to uninstall VRS 1.05 (or 1.04) following the Uninstalling VRS 1.05 procedure (described below) first. After those uninstallation steps have been followed, you can then reinstall VRS 1.05. See the Uninstalling VRS 1.05 following the instructions in the FAQ (#6) that addresses installing VRS 1.05 (shown below).

5. Uninstalling VRS 1.05

Unless you want to downgrade your computer from version 1.05 to 1.04, you'll probably never need to uninstall VRS. If that's your goal, however, remember also to reinstall the Scanner AVOCET PCB with VRS 1.04 firmware.

You must first remove all Kofax files completely from your computer. (Note: this procedure assumes that you have an approved version of the VRS installation CD, which will be used to re-install VRS on the computer after the these uninstallation steps have been followed).

  • Open the Windows Control Panel. Select "Add/Remove Program," and remove ACE VirtualReScan from your computer. (Press "Yes to All" when prompted.)
  • Choose Start » Find (or Search) » Files or Folders to find and delete all files of the form

Now you can reinstall the VRS 1.05 software.

6. What steps do I follow to configure my Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) video scanner to work with VRS? (Installing VRS 1.04)

Follow the the steps below to configure your Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) video scanner to work with VRS. You need to install both the VirtualReScan software, the Adrenaline 850v controller (card), and the scanner firmware, in the order described below. For complete installation details, please refer to the VRS Getting Started Guide for your Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) scanner.

Software:

  • Insert the VirtualReScan software CD provided with your Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) scanner in your computer. The installation should start right up, in which case you can simply follow the prompts on the screen. (Otherwise, open the CD and double-click Setup.)

    Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
  • The installation will create a VCDemo program that can be launched by selecting Start » Programs » Kofax VRS » VCDem32P.exe.

    Refer to the Operator Manual for your Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) scanner "VRS Getting Started Guide" for instructions on how to use VirtualReScan.
  • Install the Kofax Adrenaline 850v controller (card) into your computer. Then follow the Windows prompts to install and configure the new hardware in Windows.

Firmware:

  • Connect your scanner to your computer with its Kofax VRS cable, and turn it on.
  • Locate and double click on the file "fwwizard.exe", which is most likely in the C:/Program Files/Kofax/Imgctls/Bin. (If your software was installed on a different disk, you may have to replace "C" with "D" or another letter.)

    This will cause the firmware wizard program to launch.
  • Select the "Typical" install option, choose "Next" and click "Auto Detect." After a few seconds, your scanner type and currently installed Avocet firmware version will be displayed.
  • Click "Next" to begin the software download. (This will take several minutes to complete.)

After the firmware has been loaded, confirm the Avocet firmware version that is installed on the scanner with the"Code Revision Numbers" menu. Press the "Next" button on the scanner until its display shows "Avocet Software v1.05.17".

8. I have installed the Adrenaline 850v controller (card) and VRS software for my Böwe Bell+Howell 8000 Plus Series (VRS) scanner into my computer and it isn't working. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?

It is very likely that the Adrenaline 850v controller (card) was installed before the VirtualReScan software. Uninstall the software completely (see instructions above) and remove the Adrenaline 850v controller (card). Reinstall the VirtualReScan software, restart the computer, then reinstall the Adrenaline 850v controller (card).
