3. Does VRS 4.2 run under Windows Vista?

VRS 4.2 is certified to run on a Microsoft Widnows Vista operating system (Enterprsie and Business editions, 32-bit or 64-bit).

Important:  To use VRS with Windows Vista, your scanner must have a Vista-certified driver.  Check with the manufacturer to confirm that your scanner will work with Vista.  You can use VRS with USB scanners in a Windows Vista environment, but SCSI scanners currently are not supported by Windows Vista 64-bit edition.  You can consult the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com for updated information related to operating systems and service packs.

User Account Control
You must turn off User Account Control while you are installing or uninstalling VRS 4.2 on a computer where the Windows Vista operating system is running.

  • To turn off User Account Control
  • Log in to Windows Vista under the account that will be used when you install or uninstall VRS 4.2.
  • From Control Panel, select User Accounts | Turn User Account Control on or off.
  • Clear the check box labeled “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer,” and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer and proceed with the installation or uninstall process.
  • After you install or uninstall VRS 4.2, turn on User Account Control again, according to your preferences.

Windows Vista Incompatibility with Some Scanners
The following scanners are not certified to work with VRS in a Windows Vista environment: (SPR00029343)

  • Kodak i100 series
  • Kodak i200 series
  • Kodak i600 series
  • Panasonic KV-S1020C, KV-S1025C, and KV-S2048

Scanner Communication Issue
Some scanner manufacturers have not certified their scanner drivers to work in a Windows Vista environment.  As a result, you may notice that a reserved scanner loses its ability to communicate with the scanning application if the application is closed and reopened.  In this situation, you might receive an error message indicating that the scanner could not be detected, even though it worked successfully in a previous scanning session.  (SPR00029426, SPR00034748)

Workaround:  Once you power cycle the scanner and restart the computer, communications between the scanner and the scanning application are restored.

4. Does VRS 4.2 require Microsoft .NET Framework, and if yes, what version is required?

Yes VRS 4.2 required Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

The VRS 4.2 installer checks to determine if Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 exists already on your computer.  If not, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed automatically during the VRS installation.  If other applications on your computer rely on the Microsoft .NET Framework, you should verify that the installation of version 2.0 does not introduce any compatibility issues. For more information, refer to your Microsoft .NET Framework documentation.

6. Are there any limitations when installing VRS 4.2 over a previous version of VRS?

If you are upgrading to VRS 4.2 from an earlier VRS version, keep the followinuidelines in g gmind:

  • You cannot install VRS 4.2 successfully over a version of VRS that is earlier than VRS 3.5.  If your VRS installation version is earlier than VRS 3.5, you must upgrade to VRS 3.5 before proceeding with the VRS 4.2 installation.  You can download the VRS 3.5 upgrade from the Product section of the VRS 3.5 Downloads Web page.

Note: VRS 4.2 is available for download and should be downloaded only by customers who previously have installed licensed versions of VRS 4.0 Plus or VRS 4.1 Professional.  Customers currently using a licensed version of VRS 3.5 will need to purchase an upgrade to VRS 4.2 Professional (part number UP-0001-0004).  Customers who have a licensed version of VRS 4.0 Standard or VRS 4.1 Basic installed can download VRS 4.2, but will see no change in available features; the only notable difference for VRS 4.2 Basic users is that VRS 4.2 Professional Desktop Productivity enhancements are accessible in demo mode.

  • You can install VRS 4.2 over an existing version of VRS 3.5 or VRS 4.x.  It is not necessary to remove VRS 3.5 or VRS 4.x before upgrading to VRS 4.2.

When installing VRS 4.2 over an existing instance of VRS 3.5, the installer will display a message to indicate that it has detected the earlier version.  In this case, click Continue and then proceed with the installation procedure according to the instructions in the VirtualReScan (VRS) Installation Guide

Note:  After responding to the prompt, you may notice a slight delay before the upgrade is started.  The length of the delay may vary, according to the speed of your computer.

  • When installing VRS 4.2 over an existing instance of VRS 4.x, the installer will display a message to indicate that it has detected the earlier version.  In this case, click Yes and then proceed with the installation procedure according to the instructions in the VirtualReScan (VRS) Installation Guide.

Important:  If you download and install a VRS 4.2 product upgrade from the Kofax Web site without purchasing the appropriate license, a demo stamp is applied to any images that you scan.  Once you purchase and activate the appropriate license, the demo stamp is no longer applied.
