The VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.0 product was released on 04/28/05.

What Is New in VirtualReScan 4.0?

New VRS 4.0 features

VRS 4.0 supports the following new features, known as VRS Plus features. These features are available to users who have a VRS Plus license:

  • Automatic color detection
  • Background smoothing
  • Content-based rotation
  • Blank page deletion
  • White background cropping and deskew
  • QC Later mode for Ascent Capture 7.0 users (license dependent)

Note: If you implement all of the VRS Plus features simultaneously, there is some potential for performance degradation.

Additionally, VRS 4.0 includes the following:

  • Improved user interface updated to support the Windows XP look and feel
  • Ability to download product updates

Note regarding VRS 4.0 Licensing:

  • If you wish to use the new VRS Plus features with your Desktop or Workgroup/Departmental level scanner, you will need to contact Kofax Inside Sales Support or your Kofax authorized reseller to obtain the appropriate license.
  • If you wish to use VRS 4.0 with a Production level scanner, you will need to purchase a production class license by contacting Kofax Inside Sales Support or your Kofax authorized reseller. For more details, please refer to Knowledgebase Article #5194.

VRS 4.0 supported applications

VRS 4.0 supports all ImageControls-, ISIS-, and TWAIN-based applications. VRS is certified for use with wide range of ImageControls-developed applications including Kofax Ascent Capture 5.51, Ascent Capture 6.x, and Capio 1.1. VRS 4.0 has also been tested and certified with the following ISIS & TWAIN applications:
  • Adobe Acrobat 5.0
  • Pixel Translations QuickScan Pro 3.0

VRS 4.0 Service Pack 1 History

The VRS 4.0 Service Pack 1 product was released on 08/24/05. It updates the VRS version 4.00.071 product to version 4.00.119. This Service Pack contains a new feature and a number of resolved problems, including those found in all previous VRS 4.0 updates.

The VRS 4.0 Service Pack 1 release is intended to be installed directly over the existing VRS 4.0 program (with or without the VRS 4.0 Critical Update 1 release.) This Service Pack 1 release can be obtained from each of the following options.

  • From the VRS Update Manager, which can be accessed:
    • During the VRS 4.0 installation.
    • By selecting “Check for Updates” from the Kofax VRS program group.
    • When using VRS, by selecting “Check for Updates” from the Help menu in the VRS Interactive Viewer menu bar.
  • As a download from the Patches section of the Kofax Technical Support Web site’s VRS 4.0 Downloads Web page.

Kofax VirtualReScan Support

Kofax provides two types of support for all non-legacy VirtualReScan releases including General and OEM, as described below.

  • "No-Charge"
    “No-Charge” support consists of Web-Based support that includes the Kofax Knowledgebase and the Kofax Customer Portal for both General and OEM releases of VRS.
  • "Fee-Based"
    "Fee-Based" support via telephone from Kofax, is available for All General releases, Basic and Professional OEM releases of VRS. However, Basic OEM releases of VRS are first referred to the scanner manufacturer for 1st level support.
