General Kofax Express 2.0 Questions

1. Is there any important installation information that I should review before I install Kofax Express 2.0?

Yes. If a previous version of Kofax Express is currently installed on your computer, you need to remove it before installing Kofax Express 2.0. When removing the earlier version, you have the option of retaining jobs, job templates, and profiles for use in the new version. You should export any pending batches before performing the update.

2. What is a Kofax Express 2.0 Evaluation License?

When Kofax Express 2.0 is started for the first time, an evaluation license goes into effect for a certain number of days. During the evaluation period, you can use all of the product features without limitations.

If the Kofax Express 2.0 purchased license is not activated before the end of the evaluation period, Kofax Express 2.0 switches to demonstration mode. As a result, a stamp is applied to images that you scan, and export operations are limited.

While the evaluation period is active, a reminder is displayed each time Kofax Express is started. Once the purchased license is active, the reminders are discontinued.

3. How many Kofax Express 2.0 license levels are there?

There are six license levels available to match the type of scanner you are using:

Kofax Express Desktop: typically up to 25 ppm

Kofax Express Workgroup: typically up to 50 ppm

Kofax Express Production Low-Volume: approximately 80 ppm

Kofax Express Production Mid-Volume: approximately 90 ppm

Kofax Express Production High-Volume: approximately 100 ppm

Kofax Express Production Super High-Volume: typically more than 120 ppm

4. How do I determine which Kofax Express 2.0 license level is right for me?

For the most current list of Kofax Express 2.0 certified scanners, visit the Kofax Scanner Configurator or consult the Kofax Express Scanner Certification list.

Please note that occasionally Kofax categorizes scanners differently than their manufacturers do (for example, the manufacturer's "Workgroup" scanner may be classified by Kofax as a Desktop scanner; or the manufacturer's "Production" scanner may be classified by Kofax as a Workgroup scanner).

5. Are there differences among the Kofax Express 2.0 license levels?

There is no difference in the feature set; all Kofax Express 2.0 features are available with each license level.

6.Is Kofax Express 2.0 available in different languages?

Yes, Kofax Express 2.0 is available in the following languages:

Your Kofax Express 2.0 installer includes OCR language support for English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. If you require OCR support for other languages, use the Kofax Express - OCR Language Support installer, which is included with the other product files. You must complete the Kofax Express installation before running the supplemental OCR Language Support installer.

7. What is the best way to locate answers to my Kofax Express 2.0 questions?

The Kofax Express Getting Started Guide included in the Kofax Express 2.0 .ISO file (or on the Kofax Express 2.0 CD) will guide you through the installation procedure. The guide is also available for download from the Product Documentation section of the Kofax Express 2.0 Downloads Web page.

A 10-minute, narrated tutorial is also available to learn about the application. To view the tutorial, select the Help tab, go to the Help group, and click the Tutorial button. As another option, click here to go to the Kofax Express tutorial located on this Web site.

Online Help is available by clicking F1, by clicking the question mark button in the upper right corner of the interface, or by clicking the Help button on the Help tab at any time while Kofax Express is running.

What's new in Kofax Express 2.0?

The articles below provide brief descriptions of what is new in the Kofax Express 2.0 product.

1. Kofax Express 2.0 Supported Scanners

Kofax Express is certified with a wide range of industry-standard scanners, and new scanners are certified on a regular basis. Kofax Express 2.0 now also offers the possibility to connect to any scanner that is certified with VRS through its ISIS driver. Although some scanners are not yet Kofax Express certified, they can be used with the application in a compatible mode.

The Kofax Express 2.0 scanner categories are as follows:

Certified: The scanner is thoroughly tested with the Kofax Express feature set. Advanced features (multifeed, color drop out, and feeder speed), if available from the scanner, are available directly from the Kofax Express interface.

Certified*: The scanner is tested with the Kofax Express feature set. Advanced features (multifeed, color drop out, and feeder speed), even if available from the scanner, are configured through the scanner driver instead of the Kofax Express interface.

Compatible: The scanner is not tested with Kofax Express. Advanced features (multifeed, color drop out, and feeder speed) are configured through the scanner driver instead of the Kofax Express interface.

2. Database lookup for index fields

Kofax Express 2.0 now allows a user to populate an index field using a database. Though not all databases are known to work, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle are known to populate a Kofax Express 2.0 index field.

The Kofax Express 2.0 user can select the desired index value from a drop list or use a bar code to enter the data, which will then be validated against the database. Other fields can be mapped so that additional data located in the database can then populate other fields.

3. FolderScan

The Kofax Express 2.0 FolderScan feature will import all image documents (PDF, TIFF, JPG, BMP) into the Kofax Express 2.0 product. If the document is color or grayscale, VirtualReScan (VRS) cleanup can be applied to the document. It also has Continue on Error and Watch Indefinitely options.

The FolderScan feature was available in demonstration mode in the Kofax Express 1.1/1.0 product. NOTE: Kofax Express 2.0 introduces new options not found in the FolderScan feature of Kofax Express 1.0/1.1.

4. Searchable PDFs

The Kofax Express 2.0 product can now perform OCR on documents when exporting the document as a PDF. The OCR performed allows the exported document to be created as a searchable .PDF.

5. PDF Super compression

When Kofax Express 2.0 exports a document as a PDF, there is an option that allows the user to apply extra compression to the PDF (to reduce the file size). It is important to note however, that when a PDF document is compressed, the image quality can be effected.

6. Background export

Kofax Express 2.0 contains a background export option which allows the export process to occur in the system's background, allowing the user to continue to work undelayed in Kofax Express.

When exporting a batch in the Kofax Express 1.0 and 1.1 products, the user was forced to wait until the export was completed before resuming work within Kofax Express.

7. Vista 64-bit support

Kofax Express 2.0 now supports the both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista (Enterprise or Business edition) Service Pack 2 operating systems in addition to the Windows XP Professional, SP3 operating system.

The Kofax Express 1.0 and 1.1 products only supported the Windows Vista (Enterprise and Business editions, 32-bit) and Windows XP Professional operating systems.

8. VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.5 features

The Kofax Express 2.0 product contains the following features introduced in the VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.5 product. These VRS features are the ability to perform Edge Cleanup on color and grayscale documents and the following Advanced Clarity options.

Analyze Color – Uses color image as opposed to grayscale image to perform Advanced Clarity cleanup. As you might imagine, this helps mostly if the original document has color components.

Ignore Picture – Advanced Clarity will ignore any picture it detects on the document. Having Advanced Clarity consider a picture can slant the results to be more considerate of the picture versus the text on the document.
