Kofax Announces Kofax Express 2.5

Kofax Express 2.5 is now available.  Existing customers can download the upgrade at the Kofax Electronic Fulfillment site (http://delivery.kofax.com).  Evaluation versions are also available for download (http://www.kofax.com/express/download.asp).

What is new for Kofax Express 2.5:

  • Zonal OCR: Kofax Express automatically extracts index field data from documents. Users can train Kofax Express to locate the key index information in a document and Kofax Express will automatically remember that location and extract the data from future documents, which reduces the time it takes to process documents and makes indexing much easier for users.
  • Rubber Band OCR: Kofax Express users can now easily index documents by selecting the text in the document with their mouse. Kofax Express automatically populates the index field with the information highlighted by the user, saving keystrokes and making the indexing of documents faster and easier.
  • Admin and Non Admin Modes: Features of Kofax Express can now be restricted based upon the user allowing for tighter control of the application.
  • Export Enhancements: Certified support for Microsoft SharePoint 2010.  Updated support for ASCII encoding and Tiff Technical Note Two file formats.  Custom file naming now supported for single page exports.
  • Document Separation: Document separation based upon bar code value change is now supported.
  • Roll-up of Previous Releases and Service Packs

Kofax Announces Kofax Express 2.0 Service Pack 1

Kofax Express 2.0 Service Pack 1 is now available on http://www.kofax.com/express/download.asp for immediate download.  The Service Pack 1 includes:

  1. Support for Windows 7: Kofax Express 2.0 is certified on computers running the Windows 7 operating system (32-bit or 64-bit). Check your scanner manufacturer’s Web site to determine if the driver for your scanner is compatible with Windows 7, because support may vary from one manufacturer to another. You can check for updated information about Kofax Express operating system requirements on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com
  2. Czech language support: Kofax Express 2.0 is now available for the Czech language. The user interface and the documentation are both translated to Czech. Kofax Express is also available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.
  3. Database Lookup Support Extended to MySQL: MySQL is added to the list of supported databases for the Database Lookup feature. You can link an ODBC source to MySQL, Microsoft Access, Excel, SQL Server, or Oracle databases for the purpose of instantly populating index field values or building a choice list index field.   4. Long Paper Scanning: Long paper scanning is supported for certain high-volume, production class scanners. It gives you the ability to scan paper lengths that extend beyond the standard dimensions, including the maximum.

Automatic Image File Importing
Release 2.0 optimizes the FolderScan function, which allows the automatic import of image files (TIFF, PDF, JPG, and BMP) from a folder directly into Kofax Express, better enabling capture from sources such as MFPs, fax servers and saved images. This provides users with a time and cost saving single interface to their back end repository for images from all sources.

Improved PDF Support
Now supporting both PDF and PDF/A formats, Kofax Express 2.0’s compression maintains crisp, clear color images delivered in file sizes associated with black and white images, leading to quicker downstream processing and improved efficiencies. The software also extends its OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to expand its searchable PDF capabilities, allowing users to more easily and accurately search for data within PDF documents.

Advanced Database Support
Kofax Express 2.0 offers advanced database support capabilities. This includes the ability to connect to any ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) compliant repositories such as Microsoft Access, SQL Server or Oracle to instantly look up and then populate an index field value, thereby accelerating indexing tasks and improving accuracy. In addition, the software now features an export API that enables the creation of customized export connectors to virtually any repository, allowing users to increase efficiency while cost effectively leveraging existing infrastructure.

BBH Ngenuity Scanners Certified For Use With Kofax Express

ngenuity-side-viewBowe Bell + Howell’s recently introduced Ngenuity line of production scanners is now certified for use with Kofax Express v1.1.  Ngenuity models 9090 and 9125 will use a Kofax Express mid-volume production license, while the Ngenuity 9150 will use a Kofax Express high-volume production license.  BBH’s Ngenuity scanners are now certified for use with the latest versions of Kofax Capture, Kofax Express and VRS.

To use Kofax Express 1.1 with Ngenuity scanners, customers must install both Kofax Express and the free VRS 4.5 upgrade (available on the VRS downloads page), then install the free Ngenuity license upgrade patch (available on the Kofax Express downloads page).

Updated Kofax Express Scanner Certification and Licensing Guide Now Available

An updated version of the Kofax Express Scanner Certification and Licensing Guide is now available through the collateral link on the Kofax Express website.

In addition to adding several new scanners, the Guide revises the license required for over a dozen scanner models to a lower level.  To utilize these new Kofax Express license levels, users must download and install the free VRS 4.5 update found in the Support section of the Kofax website. Kofax recently completed certifying four new, high-performance scanners from Canon.  The Canon imageFORMULA DR-6010C (60 pages per minute), DR-6050C (65 ppm), DR-7550C (90 ppm) and DR-9050C (112 ppm) were all certified for use with the most recent version of VRS (4.2) and Kofax Express (1.1).  The DR-6010C, DR-6050C and DR-7550C will use a VRS workgroup-level license and an Express low-volume production license.  The DR-9050C requires a VRS production-level license and an Express mid-volume-level license.

To use VRS 4.2 or Express 1.1 with these scanners, customers must download and install the necessary software drivers (a.k.a., component installers).  They can be found on the Kofax support downloads page for VRS and Express.

Three of Kodak’s production scanners were certified for use with Kofax Express v1.1.  The i620 (80 pages per minute) and i640 (100 ppm) require the use of a Kofax Express v1.1 mid-volume license, while the i660 (120 ppm) requires a Kofax Express v1.1 high-volume license. 

Please note that although the Kodak i610, which does not scan in color, is VRS 4.2 Professional certified, it is not certified for use with Kofax Express.  However, Kodak’s other production scanners (i730, i750, i780, i1840, i1860) have all been Kofax Express certified.
