QStar is a leading storage management software provider with global sales and support operations. Founded in the US in 1987, QStar has thousands of customer installations across a wide range of industries. Companies depend on QStar’s innovative software solutions to provide secure and cost effective storage management for their business critical data.
Built for demanding data center environments, the HSM software manages the lifecycle of data across multiple storage levels. HSM provides the foundation for a resilient 3-2-1 archive strategy by combining fast RAID backed by a secure optical or tape archive and complete offline media management.
Designed to keep pace with a growing archive through non-disruptive incremental expansion, the HSM platform scales from terabytes to petabytes and supports green data center initiatives using automated libraries that dramatically reduce power consumption. HSM provides a very cost effective storage platform with the data longevity and record authenticity essential for professional archives.
The HSM archive and data management software platform can be installed on a wide range of operating systems including: Windows, Sun Solaris, HP/UX, IBM AIX, Linux and Apple Mac OS X.
Data Director extends the disaster prevention capabilities for SntrySTR and HSM archives by creating greater system resilience and higher data availability. Data Director uses advanced transaction level synchronous mirroring technology to ensure that data archived on an optical or tape library is continuously replicated within a site or across the globe.
Data Director is available with multiple real-time mirroring options that include media mirroring within a single library (DDR1), device mirroring within a single site (DDR2), and site mirroring across multiple geographic locations (DDR3).
Simulated Disc or Tape Jukebox extends the functionality of SntrySTR and HSM by creating a mirrored multi-level archive using mixed storage technologies. In combination with Data Director, SDJ / STJ can simultaneously mirror archive data on magnetic disk storage (RAID, NAS, CAS) and to a secure optical or tape library. This provides very fast access to archive records from disk storage with secure retention, and an extra level of system resilience mirroring to optical or tape.
Network Migrator provides heterogeneous server and client data migration services for stand alone applications or for archives managed by SntrySTR, and HSM. Utilizing advanced policy management, less frequently used files stored on distributed servers or clients can be automatically migrated to a central archive while remaining fully accessible from their local file systems.
A combination of file and file system attributes can be used to control the movement of data including: file modification date, file extensions, regular expression searches, and high-water marks. Once defined, data is migrated to the designated storage device and when archive retention dates have been met, files are released for managed or automatic deletion at the end of their lifecycle.
Data security, availability and system recovery time are the most important criteria to take into account when choosing an archive system for business critical data. With the combination of Data Director and Simulated Disk Library, QStar provides synchronous data mirroring continuously at a transaction level, both the primary and the secondary logical volumes are always exact duplicates. The logical volumes may be in different libraries or Raid Arrays (SDJ) and in different locations on a LAN or even a worldwide WAN, and may even be of different archival media types.
Using the Data Director DDR3 option and the simulated disc library on the primary location, QStar provides hard disc based performance for writing archive data and immediate access to archive data without any delay based on library movements or drive spin-up/down times.
The foundation of a QStar archive solution is a SntrySTR archive appliance or the HSM open system software. This platform is designed for long term archive environments and uniquely positioned to create a resilient 3-2-1 archive environment – 3 copies of all critical data, archived on 2 media types, with 1 copy offsite on removable media. This strategy creates a highly resilient archive environment, while optimizing storage resources and reducing IT administration overhead.
Each QStar software component plays an important role in a larger 3-2-1 strategy. Data Director provides the mirroring functionality required to manage multiple copies of archive data across different media types at different locations. Network Migrator stages data from high cost, high performance disk to more cost effective and long term archive media. And SDJ / STJ offers a high performance disk option to improve access speed and archive resilience. Together they enable the 3-2-1 Archive and Data Protection Best Practice.
