EMC Centera: Archiving and availability of Fixed Content

Centera is a hard disk based storage system for what is termed "Fixed Content". The expansion stages, or their scalability, range from a net capacity of 3 TB through to petabytes.

Company-wide Content Addressed Storage (CAS) is EMC's response to the explosive rise in the volume of digital fixed content, such as pictures, contracts, films, e-mails and other electronic information. Today, the data stocks held by companies are doubling every six to eight months. Around 10% of all information is held in structured form in databases and operative systems, whilst 90% is unstructured information and documents. For this reason, it is becoming increasingly important for companies to be able to access their complete data stock and use it at any time online.

Centera is accessed via an API directly from the application and is physically connected with the network via at least 2 access nodes in Centera.
If the application is not directly connected, the Legato DiskXtender for EMC Centera provides a way of migrating data to Centera.
This solution will be of particular benefit to sectors of industry that manage large data volumes with content that remains the same. This would be the case, for example, for health authorities, the media industry in television and film, local authorities and the financial sector in which the information to be stored has to be available over several years.

Compliance Edition

With an additional software option, Compliance Edition, the saved data can be protected against overwriting or modification. This option is therefore used for archiving and DMS. Particularly if speed is an important factor and a large number of users frequently access the storage system at the same time, Centera is the ideal solution.
