System Requirements

The server and client workstations used for Kofax Document Exchange Server must meet the system requirements described in this section.

Server Requirements

Kofax Document Exchange Server must be installed on a dedicated server that meets the requirements in this section.

Operating System

Kofax Document Exchange Server requires either of the following versions of Microsoft Windows Server:

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x86 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x86 Edition with Service Pack 2

Minimum Hardware Requirements

The server must meet the following minimum hardware requirements. Production servers should exceed these requirements.

  • 2 GHz Pentium 4 or compatible microprocessor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 100/1000 Mbps network card (10 Mbps not supported)

Certified VMWare Configurations

Kofax Document Exchange Server supports the following host operating systems. For a list of the supported hardware for running VMWare, please refer to the VMWare installation guide available from the manufacturer's Web site.

ESX Server version 3.5

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x86 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x86 Edition with Service Pack 2

VMWare Server 1.0.8 and 2.0

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x86 Edition with Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x86 Edition with Service Pack 2

Hard Drive Space Requirements

Make sure that there is sufficient space on the hard drive for the database. A minimum of 25 GB is recommended as an initial amount of free hard drive space. Additional space will be needed as the database grows. Refer to the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Administrator’s Guide for information about configuring Kofax Document Exchange Server to allow sufficient free drive space.


Open Ports

Ports 80 and 8080 must be available for use by Kofax Document Exchange Server. If Internet Information Services (IIS), a Web server, or another application uses these ports, reconfigure it to use different ports. If IIS, a Web server, or an application cannot be reconfigured, disable or uninstall it or install Kofax Document Exchange Server on another computer. If you are installing Kofax Document Exchange Server on a computer with Kofax Capture and Kofax Capture Import Connector - Web Services, refer to Installing Kofax Document Exchange Server with Kofax Capture beginning on page 7 of the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Installation Guide.

Some MFPs also need port 8888 open in the network connection between Kofax Document Exchange Server and the device. Refer to the MFP administrator guide for information.


Host Name

The computer’s host name should not exceed 15 characters, which is a requirement for the embedded database installation. If you cannot modify the host name to meet this requirement, install Kofax Document Exchange Server on another computer.


Client Requirements

This version of Kofax Document Exchange Server provides browser-based applications, Kofax Document Exchange and Kofax Administration Console, which require the following.

Note: For information on additional requirements if you want to allow users to scan directly from Kofax Document Exchange (using the feature called WebScan), refer to Setting Up to Scan Directly from Kofax Document Exchange beginning on page 16 of the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Administrator’s Guide.


Monitor Display Resolution

To view client software correctly in a browser, the monitor display resolution must be at least 1024 x 768 with 16-bit color and Normal fonts.


Certified Web Browsers

Kofax Document Exchange Server requires a Web browser to run thin clients and view the Help. The following browsers have been tested with Kofax Document Exchange Server:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and 2.0

Adobe Reader Requirement

To view PDF files on Kofax Document Exchange Server client workstations, you need the current version of Adobe Reader.


Supported Hardware and Software

Kofax Document Exchange Server supports the following hardware and software, including MFPs, destination types (such as content management systems), and versions of Kofax Document Scan Server. Refer to the indicated documentation for instructions to set up the product for use with Kofax Document Exchange Server.


Certified MFPs

The following MFPs are certified for this version of Kofax Document Exchange Server. Refer to the appropriate Kofax Document Exchange Server MFP administrator’s guide for instructions for installing and configuring the necessary software. MFP administrator’s guides are in the \setup\Guides folder on the Kofax Document Exchange Server installation media and are installed with the product in the \Documentation\Guides folder.

Hewlett-Packard MFPs

The following table shows the models and group numbers of certified HP LaserJet multifunction peripherals (MFPs). Instructions for configuring the HP MFPs are in the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Administrator's Guide for HP MFPs, which can also be found in the DES 2.5 software for HP LaserJet multifunction peripheral (MFP) products download file, located here.

The group indicates which Open eXtensibility Platform for Devices (OXPd) software to install. HP models have similar numbers, so make sure that you identify the group number correctly.

For firmware, memory, and other requirements, refer to the release notes provided with the OXPd. Instructions for opening the HP release notes is provided in the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Administrator's Guide for HP MFPs.

For user authentication at the HP MFPs, Kofax Document Exchange Server supports the following SecureJet and SafeCom versions:

Note: The Lexmark or InfoPrint MFP must have a hard drive to provide sufficient storage space for images. If the MFP only has flash memory, install a hard drive before using it with Kofax Document Exchange Server.

Fujitsu Network Scanners

The following Fujitsu network scanners are certified for Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5.

  • The Fujitsu fi-6000NS and fi-6010N network scanners are certified for Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5.
    • For the Fujitsu fi-6000NS network scanner, firmware version in001 01.01.01.0024 is supported.
    • For the Fujitsu fi-6010N network scanner, firmware version is001 01.04.01.0005 (or later) is supported.
  • Instructions for configuring the network scanners are in the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Administrator’s Guide for Fujitsu Network Scanners, which can also be found in the DES 2.5 software for Fujitsu Network Scanners download file, located here.

Certified versions of Kofax Document Scan Server

Kofax Document Exchange Server supports the current firmware release of Kofax Document Scan Server. Refer to the Kofax Web site for firmware releases and supported scanner. Information about setting up a Kofax Document Scan Server is in the Kofax Document Exchange Server Installation Guide and the Kofax Document Exchange Help.


Certified Scanners for WebScan

WebScan enables you to scan directly from Kofax Document Exchange with a scanner connected to the client workstation, and the client workstation installed with either VRS 4.2 or a TWAIN driver. To ensure the best image quality, it is recommended that you use WebScan with VRS 4.2.

The following scanners are currently certified for use with WebScan. The list identifies with an asterisk (*) those scanners that are bundled with VRS (either Professional or Basic).

  • Biscom Fax Server 2.0.4.0 with FAXCOM Client 9.1.6

Fax Connector Support



Kofax Fax Connector for the Document Exchange Server 2.5 enables you to route received faxes to inboxes and/or queues in Kofax Document Exchange. For instructions on configuring the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 product, refer to the Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5 Configuration Guide for Fax.

 

Prior to configuring the Kofax Fax Connector to send documents by fax, be sure that you have done the following:

  • Set up and configure one of the following fax servers shown above as described in the fax server documentation.
  • Confirm the following is installed:
    • Windows Server 2003 (Standard or Enterprise Edition) with Service Pack 2
    • Kofax Document Exchange Server 2.5, on a server where it will be able to communicate with the fax server.

Note the following important information about supported versions:

  • The EMC Documentum and IBM DB2 Content Manager connectors are only supported on Kofax Document Exchange Server running on 32-bit Windows system. They are not supported by Kofax Document Exchange Server running on 64-bit Windows systems.
